Vastu Shastra influences the buying decisions of many homebuyers in India. Whether you follow Vastu strictly or consider it one factor among many, understanding the common Vastu preferences can help you evaluate options and make a more informed choice.

Common Vastu preferences in apartments

• Main entrance: North, east, or northeast-facing entrances are generally preferred. South and southwest-facing entrances are often avoided.
• Kitchen: The southeast corner is considered ideal for the kitchen in Vastu.
• Master bedroom: The southwest portion of the apartment is typically preferred for the main bedroom.
• Pooja room: Northeast is the traditionally preferred location.

Vastu and apartment facing

"East-facing" is the most sought-after orientation, followed by north-facing. In apartment complexes, the facing depends on the unit's position within the tower. Note that the apartment entrance direction and the balcony direction may differ, and developers sometimes use the balcony direction to describe the facing.

Practical trade-offs

In multi-storey apartments, perfect Vastu compliance is difficult because the layout is fixed by the architect. Strict adherence to Vastu may significantly limit your options, especially in projects where the floor plans are standardised. It is worth deciding in advance which Vastu factors are priorities and which you are flexible on.

• Which direction does the main door of the specific unit face? Do not rely on the tower orientation alone.
• Where is the kitchen placed relative to the overall apartment layout?
• Does the project have a Vastu consultant's involvement in the design? Some developers highlight this.
• Are there units with different orientations in the same project, so you can compare options?
